Telemedicine Psychiatry: Find a Psychiatrist Online

Therapy and psychiatry can play an important role in your mental health treatment plan. In therapy, licensed therapists work with you to discuss personal problems and develop an individualized plan, but they cannot prescribe medications. Psychiatry is the medical specialty that oversees the taking of medications to treat mental health symptoms. Psychiatrists and nurse practitioners are licensed health care professionals who specialize in treating mental illness and can provide mental health services and individualized medication.

A licensed therapist cannot prescribe medication. You need a prescription from a licensed psychiatrist or nurse practitioner to get medication for mental health conditions. However, online psychiatrists can prescribe medications to treat mental illness (except for controlled substances). It is important to remember that there are no significant differences between face-to-face and telemedicine psychiatry. The telehealth platform is HIPAA compliant and all communications are confidential and encrypted.

The cost of an online psychiatrist appointment can vary depending on where you live and sometimes what mental health specialty you need. Generally, an initial psychiatric evaluation is more expensive than subsequent sessions because the first session will be longer, will include a mental health assessment and a preliminary treatment plan.
